Focus on the Positive
When it comes to problems, we often get fixated on what we don’t like. It’s a trance that keeps us stuck!
One of the best ways to take a fresh look at your problem is to ask, “What does work here?” By tuning the mind in to a different channel, we see things we never saw before.
For example, Michelle was having a hard time communicating with her teenage daughter. The girl was constantly running from one activity to the next, and their meals as a family grew further and further apart. There seemed to be no time to connect.
I asked her, “Given all this, when is communication at its best?” Two times of day came immediately to mind: in the car after school and at bedtime. Once that was clear, it was easy to find solutions that fit everyone’s needs.
Progress can come easily… sometimes you just have to ask different questions.
